The Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, formerly assistant to Alex Ferguson of Manchester United, signed a four-year contract to become the new breeder of the national team of Portugal, announced Friday the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).
“Carlos Queiroz is the new national selector,” said the FPF in a statement quoted by the agency Lusa.
“The technician Portuguese will have a four-year contract and will be presented Wednesday” is clarified.
A 55-year Queiroz succeeds Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari left for Chelsea and returned to the Portuguese selection he headed from 1991 to 1993.
Queiroz has won for Portugal two World Cups under-20 years in 1989 and 1991, with the “golden generation” of Portuguese football, which included players like Luis Figo, Fernando Couto and Paulo Sousa.
He also headed the Sporting Portugal (1st div. Portuguese) between 1993 and 1996. When abroad, he led Real Madrid (2003-2004), the team of United Arab Emirates (1997-1999) and the team of South Africa (2000-2002).
“Carlos Queiroz is undoubtedly a benchmark of excellence among the Portuguese coaches and it was my first choice for the post of national selector,” said the FPF president Gilberto Madail in the press release issued Friday.
“Since the first contact (…), I showed myself receptive to this great challenge”, for his part said Queiroz, taking a “thank Manchester United the agreement so that my return to Portugal can materialize. ”
Two days after the triumph of the Red Devils in the finals of the last edition of the Champions League, Sir Alex Ferguson had suggested that his deputy could one day replace him as head of the English club.
